ROOM BY ROOM

THE SOUND OFTHE 90S RAVE.

There was no single “rave sound”. The useful way into the decade is through the rooms, tempos and communities that shared the same night.

EARLY DECADE

Breakbeat pressure and shared vocabulary

Piano stabs, sampled breaks, basslines and hoovers gave early hardcore its rush. The music was changing quickly, and names that later appeared separate could still coexist within the same set or event.

MID TO LATE 90S

The family tree branches

Jungle deepened its rhythmic and bass language before drum & bass developed multiple identities of its own. Happy hardcore pushed speed and melody; techno and hard dance offered a straighter, darker pressure.

CURATION NOTE

A guide, not a chart scraped into a list

A future track index should explain why a record matters, when it appeared and how it connects to a documented set. Popularity alone is not evidence that a track belonged to Helter Skelter.
